Writers, writers everywhere

I had a revelation this morning as I lay in bed checking The Weather Channel on my iPhone*. And that revelation is: Words do not write themselves. Ever. The universe is a very mysterious place, and sometimes shit happens and I'm like, "Come on, universe, WTF? Why is this happening right now?", but one thing that will always, always be true is that words do not write themselves.

Every word you come across in your daily life has been written by someone or something else. I'm sure they now have like computer programs and stuff that will write basic sentences, but I like to think that for the most part words are still written by people. The description on the back of your shampoo bottle. That somewhat pretentious monologue about recycling on the side of your Starbucks cup. The synopses on the backs of DVD cases. The classifieds. And, yes, the weather report.

As I read today's forecast (read: shitty), I noticed that it was a bit more poetic than it is normally, which is the approximate moment I had aforementioned revelation.

"Rain... perhaps a rumble of thunder in the afternoon."

This faux-sentence is very well-written. Normally it would just say something like, "Rain, with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon," right? But instead, whoever wrote it replaced the comma with an ellipsis and "a chance" with "perhaps" and "thunderstorms" with "a rumble of thunder."

Who are you, mysterious Weather Channel poet? What inspired you to break out of your daily work box and be, even in just the most subtle way, a little creative? A little extra caffeine in your coffee this morning? Did you fall in love with an amazing man/woman, and now your life is completely inspired, whereas before you were just some nobody working in a tiny room full of radar maps and computers and half-eaten doughnuts, where no sunlight is permitted and all you do all day is write boring forecasts? What is your story?

And, more importantly, do you have a blog?

THSM... again

So it's been hot this weekend. Not warm. Not toasty. HOT. Today it was 89 degrees, which is apparently a record high for this time of year. When it's a particularly warm New York night, my singing man is sure to make an appearance. I've pretty much determined, based on all his musical choices, that he's ga ga gay. His late-night serenade last night cemented this opinion.

Lady GaGa - Poker Face

Some things have been going on in my life that I don't feel like talking about. Plus I've been outside enjoying the uhmazing weather. Hence the lack of posts over the past couple of weeks. Just consider it a tiny hiatus. I'll be back in full force (I hope) soon.

Until next time.

New York weather

Last weekend, a foot of snow fell on Manhattan. Today, it was 60 degrees. Most of the snow has melted, except for a couple stubborn mounds (twss) holding on until the very last moment. The random warm days have happened a few times since I moved up here, and they all have something in common: they make me very, very happy.

Today I helped J move from the far west side of Harlem to the not-so-far west side of Harlem. On my way from my hizzy to hers, I boarded the bus, found a single seat by a window, and opened said window. As the bus started moving, a gust of warm, Manhattan air hit my face. Exhiliration. It was the first time in over two months that I've felt the wind on my face through the window of a moving vehicle. As I watched Harlem move by me, for perhaps the first time since I moved up here, I felt completely content.

It's March now, so I keep hoping this is the warm weather here to stay. Of course it's not, and there will probably be a couple more really cold weeks, but a girl can still hope. I want to walk outside in jeans and a tank top and flats and be totally comfortable. I want to take a book and a blanket to Central Park and lay down and read all afternoon. I want to go jogging outside. I want to eat brunch with my friends on an outdoor terrace.

Maybe it's true that moving here during the winter is just harder than moving here during any other season. The winter is very cold and grey and dirty here, but I'm glad I moved up when I did because I think it will make me appreciate the spring that much more.

In other news, I discovered RuPaul's Drag Race today. UHMAZING.

Until next time.

So sorry

I just realized it's been nearly a week since I posted. This is criminal. But I have a good reason! I came to DC for a 3-day weekend and it turned into a 5-day one when it started snowing/sleeting on Sunday night and all the buses out of the district were cancelled. Mmmmmboo. It's Tuesday now and I'm sitting in A's apartment getting ready to go.

I had a bunch of stress dreams this morning about getting a job and my iPhone breaking and all this other random ish. Ugh. I didn't tell y'all but a few weeks ago I interviewed for a paid full-time internship with another national magazine's web site; I didn't hear back until last Thursday. They told me I was their top candidate, but they had some management shifts and decided to put the internship on hold until at least April, if they decide to hire anyone at all. Of course I was disappointed, because it seemed like it would actually be a great internship for me. But now I got another unpaid internship, which I start tomorrow. So I'll basically be working full-time for free. Is that even legal? Who knows. I just need to get as much experience as I can before someone will hire me for realz.

PS, things are great with A right now. I don't know what the future holds but I don't feel bad for wanting to do what makes me happy. And he makes me happy. So that's what I want to do. Twss?

Until next time.

Brrrrrrrrz

It's cold. Since I moved up here, it's been pretty temperate. I mean, there have been a couple days where I was like OMFG it's srsly cold and snowing or something, but overall, it's been more than tolerable. Yesterday was so nice that my landlord decided to turn the heat off for the day. Today, I assume, he will not be.

That's right, it "feels like 4 degrees F" outside. I have my window open because my radiator (which is controlled from my landlord's office downstairs) is cray cray and really hot, so typically I need some fresh chilly NYC air because I can't stand to sleep while I'm hot. Well I woke up this morning, about 30 minutes ago, and was like brrrrrrrrrchhchchchrrrzzz it's cold in here. I'm too lazy to even close my window. I just put a sweatshirt on and am bundled under my covers. Fail.

On the job front: I heard back from the mag I did the edit test for. They decided to go with someone more experienced. Sad face. BUT I am staying positive, because I fully acknowledge that that job was pretty much my dream job, and that I probably will have to work up to it. To get it right out of the gate would have been too easy. I need to start smaller.

I have had several interviews since I got to NYC: one to be a style intern at a major women's mag (but it only pays $7/hr and it's a closet internship, not an edit one, boo), another to intern at a woman's mag web site (this one is unpaid but it's only a couple days a week, and I would pretty much get to set my schedule, while getting web and blog clips, which is good), an HR interview, and one later today for a part-time temp position writing newsletters for a large media company. The last one is more a PR position, but it would be a foot in the door, it pays really well, and I could spend my extra time applying and interviewing elsewhere.

Whew. I've basically been running around town interviewing and trying to become familiar with my neighborhood for the past few days. It's pretty tiring. In case you haven't seen, I uploaded photos of my apt to facebook, so check 'em out!

Other big plans: Going to DC this weekend to see A and to go to the inauguration. I can't believe I will be there to witness the most historical event probably in my lifetime (aside from Obama actually winning the election).

Majorly yours.
